Cut flowers are an interior decoration, and if given as a gift, they are much appreciated. However, their beauty can only be enjoyed for a few days. However, there are tricks to enjoy these beautiful flowers for a few days longer.

Flowers picked in the garden or bought during the summer last longer in a vase than those bought in the winter. Why is that? It is because of the temperature shock to which flowers are subjected, and flowers are often imported from as far away as the Netherlands. Therefore, their origin can be hundreds of kilometers away. The flowers are placed in refrigerated boxes and must make a very long journey. When arranged in a vase at home, they disperse within a few days.

When choosing flowers, make sure they are properly wrapped in protective paper to withstand the freezing journey home. At home, leave them in water for at least one hour. Before arranging the flowers in a vase, cut them back a few inches and remove any dry netting that no longer absorbs water. Place the flowers in a cool hallway, perhaps overnight, to acclimate them.

Do not pour water directly from the tap into the vase, but let it sit or boil for a while. You may use the water from this morning\’s breakfast left in the kettle. Instead of filling the vase to the brim, about 1/3 of the stems should suffice. Pull out any stems that are low, as they may gradually rot in the water.

Every florist should add an extra bag of food with the flowers, not only to nourish them but also to prevent the growth of bacteria in the water. Adding a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar will have the same effect. Pure alcohol or crushed aspirin will work as well.
